How shall I celebrate
What I may not forget -
The tide turning back on wet
Shingle; the clock telling it’s almost late;
The programme from last year’s
Perfectly longed-for thing;
The receipt for adventuring
In rooms guaranteed without eyes and ears?
To be born’s a Therefore,
A command to remember -
No matter how soon it’s December
And Spring is as far away as the shore
Of Atlantis - so I recall today
As Yours, and nothing can take that away.
It is a coincidence, but a fitting one, that this is the last Editorial to be written by someone who has written The London Miscellany’s editorials since the magazine was revived in 1990, after a period of dormancy longer than Sleeping Beauty’s in her enchanted castle. My last editorial coincides with the handover of the American government from Biden to Trump.
